Poetry, and why it causes me severe discomfort.

I've never really been a big poetry person, most of the time, I do't even know whats happening unless the poem reads like a novel. That being said, I do get the symbolism in the poetry. Its basically the only thing I get. I think out of all of the versions of poetry, sonnets are perhaps the worst for me to understand. It's not that I don't like them, they sound nice, but gathering any important content from them is a daunting task for me. I have to write out each line and translate it to something similar to English. I guess I think too hard about what the writer is saying on the first 'level' of the poem (i.e. what the words say) and not enough about what the writer is saying on the 'second' level (i.e. symbolism). Something about poetry stumps me, I'm not quite sure why, and I've tried to work on it, but it is still a bear for me to understand.
